Once you have yourbibliography.bib (How to create your .bib file), the following methods can be used for defining the Bibliography file in LyX.
As shown in Image.1, go through Insert –> List/TOC –> and click BibTex bibliography..–>
This will open a new dialoag as shown in Image.2 –> click add –> browse to your bibliograhpy database (xyz.bib) file –> then click add.
The above step has defined the citation database to be used for your article, for referencing the article in the paper text, click on insert citation icon , now the article can be selected as shown in Image.3
You can also see the post for extracting only the cited references from your large yourbibliography.bib file.
Note: by default the article reference style is plain, depending on your article publisher this style can be changed.
